They are impeccably dressed, they say hi to me every time i meet then on the streets and on the pavements. They give me the feeling of being a part of a society;their society. They want want me to feel exactly that. But i feel alienated, i actually don’t feel one bit moved by their attempt to establish a rapport, they don’t cause the stirrup of the right signals in my system. So you now want to know why, welcome and read through for you to know but not necessarily concur or even remember.
By the time this column appears on the newsletter,the campus elections will either be just completed or long forgotten with the leaders having been sworn in , trained and already enjoying free lunches, free rooms or whatever else that they enjoy and that am not interested in.
You actually guessed right, now thats what am talking about, the campus politics and the attempt of “politicians” to mimic the politicians ,please take note on the use of the two words. So you have lived with your next door neighbor for the last year or so and they didn’t even attempt to know your name, or maybe actually they did try. How about this , how many times have they said hi or better still when they said hi how many times did they pause for a minute or two for some little chitchat here and there just for mingling purposes you know human beings are social creatures but we seem to remember that only when we need something from the other creature. Are you starting to see the point now? Good and am not done yet!
So now all over sudden from nowhere they just start saying hi, the greetings come in every other time you meet like five times in a day when the “normal” days would just be a quick whats up, now and this is what sucks most if you go for the handshake, they hold on to your arm so tight that you get the impression they are in desperate need to touch or be touched but don’t be fooled, they don’t need touch they are icecold! Any way after they lessen the grip they start as if its what they have been memorizing for the last few days narrating their policies; a fancy term they use to mean the issues they think are not being addressed and need so. The so called range from things to do with water, accommodation, and a whole lot of other things that need addressing, maybe they need to be taught the real classful IP addressing, with IP standing for important points.
Take a moment, ponder about the IP, our famous politicians have their own, at that very period of digging for the votes they tell how they will deliver milk on pipes, meat on cans and everything. They forget wisdom is not just white hair on the head. They fill our pockets with easy money not enough even to trade in a forex bureau and in our narrow mindedness we even fight for it and after we vote for them they not only fail to do whatever they promised to do but also stand in the way of successful implementation by a third party perhaps. Just think about it how many days does it take for the august house members to pass a bill to rise their salaries and how long does it take the same august house to pass another to tax the salary? Has it ever been passed in the first place or does it have to go through a commission of inquiry , you know how the story goes i don’t need to get redundant.
They say our sight are set too high so lets come down right here where out “politicians” IP are and i quote “we should not be taking a chapati for ten bob but six bob?” not that am exactly against that, why would i anyway? What they do is that they address , just address ,simply make known what is already on your mind if not already said. All they do is talk you see our big men in high offices have done such a good job in mentoring the young turks, they are very good too at making promises and with all said and nothing done we still find ourselves in the same state that we were before anything was done, sorry said.Its like the norminal G.D.P. Rising by the same percentage as the G.D.P. Deflator, does the real G.D.P. change; business wizards am i right? If am not save me for another day.
Lets now get a little bit honest, some heart opening and being painfully truthful with ourselves. On an election campaign how much does a banner cost and how many for the period are printed? How much does it cost to have a group of say ten guys drunks so they go shouting ones name and not just on a single occasion but a number of days, or the agents that one goes with. Am not stating figures because apparently am not an insider but i can say am decently informed. I understand that the cost they incur is much more than the total values of their salaries and any other benefits they receive. So the question is does having a seat transform one from a normal campus students to a demigod?
So the next time they clutch your hand you know they are not in for some chitchat but want to talk and you can do nothing but listen. By now most probably their tenures are on, think about what they talked, is it already being done? Did they say that the road to Mariwenyi will be tarmacked, like the administration didn’t know that the road needs surfacing. You buy that because he said it and admin didn’t.
They say we have eyes and don’t see, the mind usually gets what it wants..To me it appears we stoop that low and let them manipulate us even when we can reach them,they are not in armored cars and you know what, guys like me are going to say this silently and you are going to read this enjoy the choice of words and thats as far as it gets ;another piece of story or is it because its the second oldest profession on the face of the planet that why its so refined? Just a thought.
