We really are a peculiar type, those are not my words, recall some guy who extradites his salary and profits? Thats not enough we also live in denial. We don’t want to accept that we have failed in various faculties of our society and if somebody tries to point it out all the terms which can be synonymous to a traitor are used. I mean Kenyans really love doing things the easy way and it doesn’t matter whether its done through fair or foul means but provided its done.
This country is a system composed of several sub-systems and the aggregate behavior of such is the the one used to judge us as a nation.
Now come to think of it ,remember those days when we were young and then the president would be passing by or visiting the district headquarters, water would be poured everywhere to reduce the dust and there are people who on the next day would walk like 10 kilometers to search for that rare resource.
And just to bring this out clearly we really love the last minute rush, i mean what is the thrill in doing something in the eleventh hour when you had the chance to do it ages ago. Do you know what that translates to; compromised quality. A case in point is a university chancellor visiting one of the campuses and so they create what the IT guys call a virtual environment. This is the picture old pavements are resurfaced and portable potted plants are placed strategically on the entourage’s path, dying flowers are watered in an attempt to rejuvenate them and a massive face lifting.
Are we preaching water and drinking wine. Our institutions of higher learning teach about systems design, they teach about project management and setting of targets and milestones and the list endless. Does the stuff end right after the exams. Why do you have to create a virtual environment simply because a person higher in the hierarchy is dropping by, isn’t that denial, you should let him/her see the true state that you are in doing your day to day activities so that the person may know how best to help you. Its that point where you are clearly having a cracking headache and a friend asks you “is everything ok?” and you quickly rush to say that you are perfectly okay.
Theoretically quality is much talked about and when things are done like this quality is greatly compromised and if my understanding serves me well quality is built into a system and not built on it so trying to face lift some venue simply because because somebody is coming visiting is not building quality into but onto, no wonder our roads are punctuated by potholes.
So just a point to ponder are we actually committed to meet our goals as a nation or are we just pretending to be committed while mark timing.
I will be back for sure next week and every week
