The passing of the new constitution and its eventual promulgation led to some form of euphoria among the populace. A number of events have occurred in the short period since then and all these in the sense to show that this was the most eagerly awaited collection of lines after the ten ones engraved on a stone. The similarity with them is they came at time when those expecting them had committed so much such that the logic of having them in the first place seemed defeated. They even were shattered at the first attempt of having them and when they came around at the second attempt the original ones served their purpose just they were purported.
Therefore the new age laws in form of a new constitution bears the promises of an new land where governance is going to be streamlined and the loopholes that previously existed for embezzlement of funds or similar abuse of office are eliminated not forgetting the uprooting from office and charging those involved with such acts before. All this is coupled by a new anti-graft czar who is breathing fire, almost literary.
This makes it sound like a real heaven on earth but still I refuse to be moved simply because for instance Prof. Lumumba and I respect him, has only been practicing his oratory skills so far and nailed none. In consistency with this university students unions too get soiled with greatest of all funds misappropriation. In the spirit of transparency circulars may go round in the name of collecting x number of signature so as to give a vote of no confidence to the unions’ elected officials. When whoever is acting activist is talking you get the impression that this is the real leader; the one we asked for. What we don’t realize , for we Kenyans have short lived memory is that the same leader trying to be ousted were just as sweet talking before they moved through all the leader life cycle* and now in the last stage. We get so caught in this change thing and what happens? We change one operator with another leaving the system intact. We remove one corrupt leader and replace him/her (mostly him and I ain’t a sexist) with another who simply carries on from where the other one left and the cycle starts all over again. So the next time you chant “we want change” just ask yourself what king of change you really are talking about because all we need to change right now is the system then the operators will be automatically be taken care of.
*I talk about leader life cycle in the next blog post.
