Historically the month of august has been a month of sad stories. Since independence the nation has experienced tragic deaths some in very absurd circumstances. Need I go to the chronology of the events? No, that does not gonna be a very nice idea considering what most Kenyans are going through right now. Based on superstition and With what we have gone through since the beginning of the year I wonder if anything happening in this month would have any notable effect to our already rock bottom spirits.

I feel very proud as a Kenyan citizen to see myself having rose to the occasion and helped other Kenyans get some food. I however cannot be overcome by questions with respect to the situation in Northern Kenya. I am not happy as I write this but I have to do it anyway not because I have an avenue to pass my message across but simply because if I keep it to myself it might just kill me. Way back since I was a kid almost every year I have heard news that the people in northern Kenya are facing starvation. Those were the days when I used to depend on my parents to feed me. Times have come and went, I can now feed myself and those people up there are still depending on the government and well-wishers to feed them. I think instead of hunger the government should declare the cliché “tunaomba serikali” a national disaster since it promotes laziness among the citizens. John F. Kennedy said that we should ask ourselves what we can do for our county and not what the country can do for us.

There is one more thing about the northern Kenya situation. Before I continue let me clarify that I am facing the same hardships as any other non-political class Kenyan, I have sent my donation to the “Kenyans for Kenya” initiative and most of all very sympathetic of the northern Kenya population. As we watch the news, all we see are very old people and very malnourished children. Does it mean that there are not middle aged people in those areas? Those images look like they have been fetched from the archive only that now they contain a different politician donating foodstuffs.

Well forget about that if the situation is that hard then I go back to the government, I bet Kenya is not a desert more than Egypt yet we haven’t heard any drought or starvation for that matter over there. That’s not all, there are now some so called non-governmental organizations which are saying that they are supplying borehole drilling equipment or whatever it is that they are supplying. Where have they been all along, if at all there’s are honest intentions why did they do it before the situation got out of hand? This is because am meant to understand that these organizations at least have personnel who can handle disaster preparedness.

As I pen off, I do so not because once again I want to but to look for answers. Is this the last starvation situation? How I wish it is. Are we going to experience the same next year? Is it the prophecies coming true? Is it our sheer laziness? Or is it just obedience to the main rule of evolution that the fittest will survive and procreate!
