Earlier on this blog I have talked about the government’s failure to take care of us the citizens. This was on the issue of the expansion of Mombasa road that meant that the just concluded Sameer business park was to be demolished. It seems that the we had seen smoke without the fire. Now, slightly over two weeks ago came the Syokimau demolitions which leaves me to wonder are we as a nation what Mwalimu Nyerere once called us? A man eat man society? I mean its fine for the government to take away public land from land grabbers but really a lot is left to be desired from what those property owners have experienced.
This past Sunday listening to one of those affected in talk 360 I couldn’t help but sympathize with him. He gave an account of what he went through to put up that property and I mean if I were him I would have gone through the same procedure. He stated how he was informed of the land and then went to the sellers (Mlolongo brothers) who gave him a copy of the collective parcel of land title deed. He then went to the lands office in Nairobi and also in Machakos to verify that the land actually belonged to the said owners. Before putting up the house he had to get approval from Mavoko municipal council, which he did. Would anyone call that ignorance? Would a government officer or whoever gave the command for the demolitions accuse the property owners of ignorance? Can they actually have the audacity to call the victims land grabbers?
Those are the kind of questions that is left asking myself and wonders what the future of the so called booming property sector is? As a government you cannot tell people to invest in quality housing or have that as a policy and when they do start a very proactive process of reversing the very process they called for. it’s the governments mandate to provide housing for its citizens and quality housing for that matter. If the same government is the one involved in the demolitions how will we know which is the right place to build a house and call it a home. I cannot use my left had to take something from my pocket and since am closing my eyes assume that I don’t know what just happened. Therefore if I visit one office which clearly shows me that the piece of land in question is legitimately owned by a party A and I go ahead and purchase that piece of land then there should be qualms later about the already checked documents being faulted.
Then again now the matter is in court and the demolitions have been halted albeit for the time being. Again an inquest into the matter has been set up when the findings of the commissions of inquiry are tabled then there will be nothing to do with compensation of those affected. Therefore its seems that our government has failed to protect its citizens. It failed on its most fundamental responsibility; security on top of an array of other things (read weakening shilling). We no longer know how to acquire property anymore as we don’t know the right procedures. It’s high time the government implements the policies it has on land management and also in accordance with the new constitutions. It is our country, we won’t run away from the challenges but continue to tell the government or at least who hold the seats the jobs that they need to be doing. We all are committed to be law abiding tax paying citizens and we have no problem with that so we hope that our revenue is spent wisely to accord us a better life in terms of quality service and a very transparent flow of information corresponding to the appropriate organizational structures.
