I got to say that I didn’t know personal details about Michuki and I still don’t. All I knew was that he is famous streamlining the public transport sector and the ministry of environment. It’s even much less for Njenga Karume. Right now all the major dailies are full of detailed account of their lives it makes me feel like a political watchdog. Interesting things are said about them which all over sudden change the love-hate feeling that most of us have for the political class. It paints a totally different picture showing them as normal human being with families to take care of and errands to run as opposed to the common one of a public funds embezzling impunity protected figure that most of us have. All over sudden I find myself no longer thinking about the as politicians but as people who led lives worth living and did whatever was necessary to find success. Particularly Karume in his autobiography beyond expectations: from Charcoal to Gold clearly draws the image of how determination among other desirable traits gets one to achieving their lifelong dreams. Truly the quality of life we lead is determined by our commitment the life itself.
At over eighty years you would expect them to have seen it all. The good the bad and the ugly all in one glorious combination. To us they both bared famous and infamous attributes and we know them in various versions some true and some simply allegations. This makes me wonder just at how much uncertainty lies for most of we the young lads. There are some hard questions that we got to ask ourselves while still basking in the euphoria of “gotta live every day as if it’s the last”. How will the decisions that we make right now affect us at some point in the future. Besides, do the things that seem to matter so much right now still matter in the future, especially that distant future? A typical campus student worries about grades, money and ladies and as somebody put it not necessarily in that order. Its big deal to some that their cat marks are missing or they don’t seem to have enough cash to go out. To others all is well as long as they are the celebs around. At the end of the day the pursuit of success continues outside the campus halls. Some are stuck at the rat race for ever, some trick it and jump out after a number of years probably pursue politics!
Hopefully as the two prominent figures continue to be eulogized and eventually buried we need to take pointers from the timelines of their lives. Instead of basking and saying they belonged to Kenyatta’s inner circle hence their wealth we should engage actively in the decisions about our lives and be very categorical in what want out of it. Clearly defining the goal is a good place to start off and bearing in mind how much uncertainty lies in between then hope that the paths we take lead us to achieving what we so much crave; success.
