After April 14th 2014, Microsoft will not release any more windows XP patches. This is the infamous Zero day and that will mean a security menace. It so happens that a  good chunk of the ATMS use this operating system. This begs two questions.

1. Have the banks upgraded to windows 7?

2. If not what is the plan?

Number 1 seems to be a no brainer bearing in mind that after April 14 their ATMS will be open to Zero day attacks.

Number 2 is even more worrying. The process of upgrading any banking software never goes well. If recent upgrades is anything to go by then the next few months are a guarantee that we will all be in for some turbulent times. The last time Equity bank upgraded their system(according to what they said), clients spent days in the cold; queuing.

Whether a techy or not any ATM user will need to be interested in how this story evolves. This is why. Using an ATM card on an ATM whose software is outdated means your personal details can be compromised and used to steal money from your bank account!
